What is a Gas Storage Receiver Tank?
A gas receiver tank (or compressed gas storage tank) is a heavy-wall pressure vessel designed to store compressed gases such as air, propane, nitrogen, or natural gas. Gas tanks operate under internal pressure, requiring precise volume calculations based on geometric dimensions and pressure ratings.

Cylindrical Gas Receiver Formula:
Volume (V) = π × (Diameter / 2)² × Length + 2 × (Hemispherical End Cap Volume)
80% Maximum Safe Propane Fill Limit:
Max Safe Propane Liquid Volume = Total Tank Volume × 0.80
How to Calculate Propane & Gas Tank Capacity
- Record Tank Diameter & Shell Length: Measure outside cylinder diameter and overall length.
- Calculate Cylinder Body & End Cap Volume: Sum main cylinder body and hemispherical/ellipsoidal cap volumes.
- Apply 80% Safe Liquid Fill Limit: Liquid propane expands significantly with heat; propane tanks are never filled beyond 80% capacity.
- Convert to Water Capacity (WC) & Propane Weight: Multiply liquid volume by propane liquid density (approx. 4.2 lbs per US gallon).

For a standard 500-gallon residential horizontal propane tank measuring 37.5 inches diameter and 119 inches length:
