Cylindrical Gas Receiver Formula:

Volume (V) = π × (Diameter / 2)² × Length + 2 × (Hemispherical End Cap Volume)

80% Maximum Safe Propane Fill Limit:

Max Safe Propane Liquid Volume = Total Tank Volume × 0.80

How to Calculate Propane & Gas Tank Capacity

  1. Record Tank Diameter & Shell Length: Measure outside cylinder diameter and overall length.
  2. Calculate Cylinder Body & End Cap Volume: Sum main cylinder body and hemispherical/ellipsoidal cap volumes.
  3. Apply 80% Safe Liquid Fill Limit: Liquid propane expands significantly with heat; propane tanks are never filled beyond 80% capacity.
  4. Convert to Water Capacity (WC) & Propane Weight: Multiply liquid volume by propane liquid density (approx. 4.2 lbs per US gallon).
