What is a Horizontal Cylindrical Tank?
A horizontal cylindrical tank is a round containment vessel positioned flat on its side along its horizontal axis, supported by cradles, legs, or concrete saddles. Horizontal cylinders are widely utilized for fuel storage at service stations, chemical storage at industrial plants, and agricultural fertilizer tanks because their low profile distributes structural load over a longer ground footprint and permits easy dipstick liquid level monitoring.
Unlike vertical tanks where liquid volume scales linearly with fluid height, calculating partially filled volume in horizontal cylinders involves circular segment geometry. As liquid depth increases, the surface width of the fluid changes continuously, requiring trigonometric or circular segment area formulas to map liquid height accurately to remaining storage volume.
How the Calculator Works
The calculator uses the standard cylinder formula to determine total tank volume. To get started, enter the following values:
- Radius or Diameter of the tank
- Length of the tank
- Select your preferred output unit
Once these values are entered, the tool instantly calculates the full storage capacity of the horizontal tank.
Horizontal Tank Volume Formula
V = π × r² × L
Where:
- V = Volume of the tank
- r = Radius of the tank
- L = Length of the tank
- π = 3.14159
This formula calculates the total internal capacity of a fully cylindrical horizontal tank.
Example Calculation
Let’s consider a horizontal fuel tank with:
- Diameter: 1.4 meters (Radius = 0.7 meters)
- Length: 2.5 meters
V = π × 0.7² × 2.5 ≈ 3.85 cubic meters
Final Volume: 3.85 cubic meters = 3,850 litres
Common Uses of Horizontal Tanks
- Diesel and fuel storage
- Propane and LPG containment
- Agricultural spraying and fertilizer mixing
- Water transport tanker systems
- Industrial process storage
- Chemical and oil storage
